Nocturnal Wildlife in Costa Rica
We would be amiss to not let you know about Costa Rica’s active nocturnal wildlife, or rather Night Tour experiences you and your group may experience.
You will find a Night Tour may be one of the most exhilarating experiences you may encounter during your travel to Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is home to over 500,000 species of animals making it one of the Top 20 most biodiverse countries in the world.
What you may even more surprising is over 60% of the wildlife found in tropical rainforests come out only at night to play.
Wildlife You May See at Night
As you walk through the tropical rainforest with your Adventure Certified guide, and flashlight in hand, you will be in awe.
All of your senses will be immersed by the sights and sounds of the night in the tropical rainforest. It will likely be unlike anything you have ever experienced.
You and your group will be guided along the trials as your expert guide will spots mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and insects.
While we cannot guarantee you will spot wildlife, with over 60% of nocturnal wildlife and 140 types of mammals in the Osa Peninsula, there is a great chance of you experiencing wildlife at night.
No matter what, your night tour will be an experience you will not ever forget.
Here are some of the animals you may spot climbing, creeping and crawling in the night.
Coatis
Coatis are omnivores and have a diet consisting of lizards, frogs, insects, crabs, and fruits.
Their range includes Central America, as well as Mexico, parts of the United States, western Colombia and Ecuador. Coatis life expectancy is about 14 years.
Typically, they are active both during the day and night so they may be hearted or spotted.
Fer-de-Lance aka Terciopelo
The Fer-de-Lance (Terciopelo in Spanish) is considered one of the most dangerous snake in Costa Rica. It may be found on the Pacific coast from some parts of Mexico down to Ecuador; on the Atlantic coast, down to Colombia. In Costa Rica, it lives in most part of the Country and an important population is in the Osa Peninsula.
This snake may grow as large size as an adult, has a unique coloration pattern both as a juvenile and adult, and a large triangular head most of the time indicating that a snake is venomous.
Fun Facts: There is a false Fer-de-Lance not venomous AND banana plantations are one of their particular haunt because of their rats.
Kinkajou
Kinkajou is an animal that is found mainly in tropical rain forests and semi-tropics parts of South and Central America. Likely, you will find it reminds you of other animals you may have seen. However, it is not surprising since it is part of the raccoon and coati family.
If you see one, you will be among the few who have spotted it at night! They are seldom seen by people.
Fun Facts: Kinkajou may live up to 40-years-old and are known as “honey bears” in Costa Rica because of their smell and obsession with honey and nectar!
